About this Event

UK public sector tenders now weigh sustainability and social value at 10–30% of the score – enough to change who wins the business. In practice, many organisations continue to rely on self‑declared commitments that meet only minimum standards. And that can cost contracts. For over a decade, Planet Mark has helped 700+ organisations reduce carbon emissions and generate long-term commercial value. Our Members include organisations across construction, facilities management, manufacturing, transport and logistics, food and drink, legal, retail, financial services, and education, who utilise third-party assurance to score higher in tenders, win more business, and increase their favourability in procurement decisions. In this session, Avital Johanan, Managing Director at Planet Mark, will break down the policy landscape driving sustainability scoring in procurement. John Tarbet, Head of Strategic Accounts and Carbon Management at Planet Mark, will walk through how that translates into business outcomes, with real examples from organisations that have gained third-party assurance to close the credibility gap and win contracts. You’ll learn how sustainability weighting can be applied across UK tenders, break down the proof points evaluators look for, and the commercial case for third-party assurance that gets finance directors to say yes.If your business bids for contracts and you've ever lost marks on the sustainability section, this is the most useful 45 minutes you'll spend this month.

Agenda

  1. The sustainability tender landscape: What's changed and what's coming

Avital Johanan will outline the policy changes shaping how sustainability is assessed in UK procurement. From PPN 006 and social value weightings of 30–40%, to tighter SECR requirements and a clear cascade into private sector procurement.

She’ll explain what these changes mean in practice, what’s coming next, and how organisations across construction, FM, manufacturing, transport, food and drink, legal, retail, financial services, and education should be preparing.

  2. The credibility gap: Aligning what evaluators prioritise with the areas organisations often overlook

John Tarbet will walk through the three categories that evaluators weigh most heavily: certified carbon reporting with evidence of year-on-year reduction, framework alignment to SBTi, and measurable stakeholder engagement.

He’ll explore why self-declared sustainability commitments are assessed differently from third-party assurance pathways, and what this means for credibility and evaluation outcomes.

  3. From third-party assurances to contract: The commercial playbook

A practical session on turning sustainability investment into tender wins. John and Avital will walk through real-world examples from Planet Mark Members, showing how stronger sustainability evidence led to successful contract awards.

This section also covers the internal business case: the numbers and framing that move sustainability from “nice to have” to “revenue protection” when presenting to finance and leadership teams. Built for anyone who's ever lost the budget argument for sustainability investment and wants the numbers to win it next time.
